Highlights include the residence, garden, and stone walls
This was the former residence of Chief Retainer Oyamada Shurei, who played a key role in restoring the Yanagyu Domain’s finances.
The magnificent stone walls are particularly impressive, with an inscription indicating they were built by stonemasons from Owari in 1841 (Tenpō 12).
In 1964 (Shōwa 39), the property was acquired by author Yamaoka Sōhachi, who used the house to develop the concept for his novel "Haru no Sakamichi" (later adapted into an NHK drama). After his passing, the property was donated to Nara City in accordance with his wishes.
