A hotel where you can immerse yourself in books without worrying about the time

NIPPONIA Harima Fukusaki – The Library Retreat is a decentralized hotel created by renovating and repurposing historic buildings in the local area. Guests can stay in places rich in heritage, such as the former residence of the Miki family—a prosperous village head family (shōya) from the past—and experience the region’s culture and history firsthand.

The hotel’s defining feature is its concept of the “library.” This idea is inspired by the folklorist Kunio Yanagita (1875–1962), who spent part of his childhood at the Miki residence and developed a love for reading while surrounded by a vast collection of books. Each guest room is stocked with a curated selection of books, offering a quiet, cozy space where visitors can lose themselves in reading at their own pace. (Some rooms are intentionally free of televisions and clocks.)

The buildings used for accommodations include sections of the Miki family residence, which dates back to the Edo period (1603–1868), and a former post office built in the Taishō era (1912–1926), each with its own unique charm. With features like exposed wooden beams, earthen floors, and traditional architecture left intact, the hotel offers a nostalgic yet refreshingly novel escape from everyday life.

Within the grounds, the restaurant Farms' Kitchen Mikiya serves imaginative French-based cuisine made with an abundance of fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Whether you’re relaxing with a book in a historical setting or savoring local flavors, NIPPONIA Harima Fukusaki – The Library Retreat is a perfect place for those looking to connect with the cultural richness of Fukusaki and enjoy a deeply fulfilling stay.
