Meisho Tsukigase Ume Forest

One of the First Places in Japan Designated as a Scenic Spot by the Government

When it comes to flowers that herald the arrival of early spring, plum blossoms are the first to come to mind.
In the famous plum blossom spot of Tsukigase, the Mayumi River flows gracefully through the valley, with around 10,000 plum trees lining both of its banks.
Known as “Tsukigase Bairin (Plum Gorge),” this area was designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty in 1922 (Taisho 11).
During the blooming season, many visitors stroll along the riverside paths to enjoy the plum blossoms.
Others walk the paths near Shinpukuji Temple and Tenjin Shrine, admiring the dazzling sea of blooming plum trees.
You can also enjoy local treats such as plum-flavored cuisine, rice cakes, mountain vegetables, and tea at shops along the way.

From central Nara City, it takes about 1 hour by car or 1.5 to 1.8 hours by bus to reach Tsukigase Ume Forest.
Why not take a short trip and enjoy a scenic walk?
