A row of 100 stone statues

These statues were built on the grounds of the Hachiman Shrine from 1841 to 1842.
There are ten "Shomen Kongo" statues, and between these there are 90 character-engraved pagodas (Koshin pagodas) with nine of each to come to a total of 100 statues.
During the later half of the Edo period, it was a popular religious faith practice in the Shimosa area to build lots of stone pagodas (stone statues) in the same place to accumulate merit in large amounts, and as many as 100 were built for that reason.
