A haiku by Sankyutei Gyobun, a disciple of Basho

Sankyutei Gyobun, a haiku poet who followed in the tradition Matsuo Basho, stopped along his travels while passing through Kamagaya-shuku and composed a haiku poem that reads in Japanese as "hitotsu ya-e, hito-o fukikomu, kareno-kana," which is inscribed here on the monument.
The monument also serves as a signpost for the Kioroshi Kaido Highway, and it is inscribed with "Right: Kioroshi Road" and "Left: Nakakido Road."
The Kioroshi Kaido Highway used to be bustling with people on transport routes, travelers coming from Edo going toward Kashima on pilgrimages, and people going toward Choshi. Many writers and artists passed through as well to stay at Kamagaya-shuku, including Matsuo Basho and Watanabe Kazan.
