Nara-machi nigiwai house

A Taisho-era Townhouse Open to the Public for Free

This traditional townhouse, built in 1917 (Taisho 6) by an antique dealer, features classic architectural elements including a tea room, a spacious 15-tatami mat sitting room, and a gold-leaf adorned Buddhist altar room. The elegant fusuma (sliding doors) paintings and decorative design details offer a captivating look into the aesthetics of the period. The attached storehouse dates back to the Edo period.

Now designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, the house serves as a cultural space highlighting seasonal traditions and lifestyle culture based on Japan’s 24 solar terms. It plays a central role in the vibrant community of Nara-machi.
